Salvage components from Scrap Circuitry

Hi all, I was wondering if it was possible to salvage components like IC's, capacitors, led's etc from Scrap circuitry like old video recorders, computer parts etc. People often just throw broken electronic items away so I was thinking it might be worth getting hold of some and seeing what useful things I could take off them. Any thoughts?
