robotic arm revisited

hey guys,
I have made some great design progress with the robotic arm. so now I am hoping to make the prototype.
I am going to be using arduino's and motor shield as the code for most of what I want to do is out there. however I thought I would use a head end computer. I have 2 raspberry pi's sitting here, do you think they would have the processing power to handle 8 arduinos, sending pwm control code, and receiving rotary encoder for positional accuracy?
I am hoping to get the pi to map the arm out so it never knocks against itself or the work it is doing.
