Relay and timer

I need to create a ckt which will reverse the polarity of an electromagnet after every 1 second...can anyone please tell which relay and timer would be suitable for this function?

You could use a 555 timer driving a DPDT relay. The specs of the relay friend on the voltage and current required for the electromagnet. You will probably have to take steps to prevent arcing of the relay contacts.

The voltage is 36 volts, we are planning to use three 12 volt batteries in series with 6amps

Give a thought to using mosfets as relay alternative. A bit more involved but gets around arcing ( h bridge)

Since being a mechanical engineer I am not into electronics much it wud be helpful if you elaborate it please.
