Looks like the motor draws too much current. The motor is possibly not rated for 12 V but less.
Try a 6 V lamp in series with the motor.
Or even the12 V lamp you just used.

If I run them from the controller at the same time neither the motor or light will work
Lamp and motor connected in series? Not in parallel.
Series means: wire from controller to one pin of the lamp, from the second pin of the lamp to the motor, from the other pin of the motor back to the controller. At least the light should work then.
 
Thanks for all of your help I really appreciate it, you are a clever man! I decided to buy a rotisserie motor instead of messing about getting a new 12v motor.
