RCA ICAN-6539 by S.S. Eaton, "Micropower Crystal Oscillator Design"

W

Winfield Hill

Many articles about crystal oscillators refer to an old
RCA app note, ICAN 6539, written by S.S. Eaton, titled,
"Micropower Crystal-Controlled Oscillator Design Using
RCA COS/MOS Inverters."

Does anyone out there have a copy of that app note?

Thanks,
- Win

I have a copy of a copy. Let me know by email if you still need
it and we can work out the details. Hey, it's only 33 years old!

No, sorry. My old RCA CMOS data book has app notes numbered on both
sides of 6539 :-(

I think Speff used to have it. But you'll probably need
to fund an expedition across his basement. :)

I don't *think* so.

Thankfully, I just found my old original RCA publication.
Perhaps I'll make a good scan for the good of the internet.

Thanks you guys, your comment inspired me to search again
in my basement, and I found my old original RCA copy!

Vague memories of a thread on crystal oscillators where
you owned up to having one of the earliest of the RCA
COS/MOS data books.... ISTR that edition was printed with
more pages with a smaller page size. But I chucked mine
when the 1980 edition came out. :(

The later ICAN-6086, "Timekeeping Advances Through COS/MOS
Technology" (which refers to 6539) is also worth preserving.

I have a copy of RCA's 1974 databook, which has many app notes
(and references the ican-6539, as do many articles since that
time). I have this databook not because I saved it for these
last 30 years, but because I bought it on eBay a few years ago.

Hmm, I'll have to check if that one is in the 1974 databook.

*That* one I have (in the '73 databook) without descending into "the
archives". If anyone needs it, I can scan it (about a dozen pages).

It's in the '74 book as well. But I think it'd be great if you
made a scan and posted it. That can be in trade for the scan I
just posted in a.b.s.e. of ICAN-6539, by S.S. Eaton, Jan. 1971,
"Micropower Crystal Oscillator Design Using RCA COS/MOS Inverters"

I'll also email a copy to anyone who wants - it's a 1.5M pdf file.

Thanks,
- Win

Yes please. My ISP only delivered two of your abse posts.

Please send it to me too.

I don't have access to a.b.s.e either. I have the '80 data book, and I
could be persuaded to scan an article in or two, is someone has an ftp
or web site to share them.

I'm still interested in using a 4007 as a Gilbert cell multiplier, which
some app-note describes.

BTW, a crystal supports harmonics. These modes have different
impedances. Would it be possible to prefer a mode by changing a negative
resistance value, rather than using a tuned filter? I have in mind
current-tuning a transistor to pick-out crystal harmonics. Probably an
ALC loop would be necessary also, but no LC filter?

Someone mentioned something about this in a recent thread on negative
resistance.
