Radionics D6112 lightning damage???

O

o8er

Had a lightning strike the other day. Now keypads are lit but no zone
or other data shows up on the pads. Reset power to the D6112 and it
chirps the siren once but then clicks (a relay?) a few times and the
stops. Any way to troubleshoot this without a barcode programmer? Is
it possible that one bad zone is keeping the unit down? Is the D6112
worth repairing or should I replace? If replace, what's an equivalent
unit? The D6112 has worked well for me for the last 15 years. I
kinda hate to lose it.

You cant troubleshoot it with a bar code programmer. The programmer
is only used to set up the program on the panel.

If it doesn't function after a lightning storm came through then it's
usually fried.

Get something like an Ademco Vista 20 to replace it. You'll need to
replace the panel and keypad(s), and check all the other device once
you have it working to make sure that nothing else blew.

If you go the Vista 20 route, get an alpha keypad. This way you can
program it yourself.

And don't buy it from Bass!

Thanks for the reply. The DSC units seem popular locally. Any
feedback or recommendations on them?

I've read a few posts and see Bass has a lot of input and it seems his
input benefits readers. Also his website has a lot of good info on
it. Another poster (from Mass. if I recall correctly) criticized him
for having an inaccurate picture, but when I checked out that poster's
site it was virtually empty. At least Bass has a good web site.

DSC is a family of extremely popular controls and peripherals. We use the
5010 (Power 832), the 5020 (Power 864), and Ademco's Vista series. DSC's
Meridian series smoke alarms are also excellent. We've settled on C&K for
glass break detectors, Paradox for PIR's, GRI and Sentrol for contacts.

That's a fairly standard response from people that haven't posted into the
group for very long and don't know his "history".
Also his website has a lot of good info on it.

Can't argue with that. He's put a lot of effort into making it a fairly
comprehensive site. Unfortunately, selling all those different panels means
he's spreading himself a little thin. He has a lot of knowledge when it
comes to Napco and little when it comes to other panels. He manages to
plant his foot in his mouth on a regular basis as a result. As for actual
"installation experience", I sincerely doubt he has much. The fact that he
maintains *all* residential burg systems employ an entry delay and still
advocates using a paddle (or spade) bit to drill into a walls' foot plate
(in a finished house) leads me to suspect his experience is minimal. He may
have held a license for 16 years (1983 to 1999), but I doubt he was actively
installing systems in all that time (and those that he did install involved
nothing more than the standard system). There are other inconsistancies
with respect to his "experience" as well. If you intend to purchase
equipment from him and rely on his "expertise", I would ask him to provide
the names of clients he's personally installed and serviced systems for. If
you intend on employing his services to monitor your system, ask him to
provide details with respect to his bonding and insurance. Please ensure
you perform your "due diligence" when dealing with any information regarding
your personal security and safety on line.

I don't judge an individual by how good his web site is. His behaviour on
USENET has been simply abominable. There are several other online dealers
and stores I would choose to do business with before Bass, but that's only
because I know the man after observing his behaviour for the last three
years. You can find some helpful tips on purchasing products over the
internet and a list of online security dealers here:

From my viewpoint, Robert Bass has a great web site, and as mentioned,
he offers the best and most sincere advice of anyone that I have seen.
Frankly, I do not understand why he gets "slammed" so often.

Stick around long enough and you'll see why

I have plenty of replacement parts for that system. I can also remotely
download your new panel. Since your panel is dead, you can send me the board
so I can try to retrieve the existing programming. It would be a good idea
to send me all the keypads as well, so I can fully bench test the system.

Wow! Guess my viewpoint must be very narrow and veiled. Think maybe
I should just sit bact and say nothing . . . Thanks . . .

Radionics has always been built like a brick, unfortunately there are so few
approved dealers around, that in some situations, the end user can be held
"prisoner" by some companies because no one else can service it. Much like ITT
was for so many years. Also, Radionices seems to come out with a new product
much to seldom. They'll come out with this super-duper panel, that's way ahead
of many other mfg's, then they let the whole industry pass them up for a number
of years before they introduce something new again. But .......... on the other
hand, they've been around for a long time, so they must be doing something
right.
Jim

You could say that about any panel tho, i can't think of any brand that was
behind the times at one point or another

I know it's so easy for you, but don't try to be dumber than you are.

Lol okay dad
You've just got to throw in some minute, insignificant, hardly credible fact
for ........... what? so you can appear to know something?

The number of alarm panel models that Radionics has ever produced is minscule
compared to most ........... I say "most" other manufacturers.
A given mfg's
may have a panel that may be "behind" the times but "most" manufacturers will
have another in the works, that either supplements the line, improves the line
or starts a new line. Radionics apparently, doesn't do that.

"Apparently" means you don't know, I seriously doubt Radionics hasn't had a
time in its past when it wasn't working on something new. A manufacturer
takes MANY years to develop a new panel.

Take the Advent from GE/ITI, released maybe 3 years ago and they started
working on it back in 1992 when ITI was putting out the Commander 2000.
Radionics also concentrates more on higher-end panels than many other
manufacturers which increases the development time.
I don't know for
sure but, I think they're still producing panels that were designed 20 years
ago.

Uhh no, while I'm not a major fan of Radionics I will say the 7412/9412
series is a far cry from the 8112 and right up there with everyone else.
They may have been superior then, but now they just don't hack it.

What was the last Radionics panel you programmed?
Whatever they've produced recently will probably still be around 20 years from
now when everyone else is using touch screens and UTP, and multi channel
wireless systems.

Radionics and DMP were the first 2 companies with internet monitoring
capability, somehow I doubt that will be the case. If they feel the market
wants that they will create it as any other company will and I have a
feeling its already in the works
Jeeeez does every subject have to be debatable or questioned or discounted by
your nonsensical, diminutive trifles? Get a freakin life, for cripes
sake!

Just commenting on your comment, it wasn't a slam but if you took it as one
by all means keep chewing through those restraints
