Pro-Lite PL-2100w Keyboard not working

I am trying to program a Pro-Lite PL-2100W. I only get the "Stop Mode" display. Is there some obvious reason the proprietary keyboard that came with the sign would fail to program the unit? Can I just use an old serial keyboard instead?

It looks like they're still in business, why wouldn't you contact them, and see if the owner's manual covers this? The manual seems to suggest that stop mode just means it doesn't have a mode picked to run, BUT having never used one myself, I really don't know what I'm talking about.
