playstation2 optical not working

I recently hooked up my PS2 after moving, and the optical (digital
audio) output no longer works -- I am not getting any light out of the
port, even if I activate the output in the base PS2 menu. Any ideas?
Could the optical port have become misaligned/broken during the move?

Bad LED, probably. Check the soldering on here.

I might be wrong, but I thought that to use that port, you had to
set a configuration on the PS. Otherwise it stayed dead. You
might want to recheck your audio settings on the PS

he is sure the the game he is playing supports optical audio (not sure
if they all do on the ps2) Otherwise, yes, could be a bad LED on sender

Yea, I see that now. Some ideas:

1) There is no "light out of the port". How is this determined?
By looking at the port or by looking at the end of a TOSlink
cable that has been plugged into the port? Broken TOSlink cables
are typical "moving day" tragedies.

2) I assume that he was able to "see the light" before the move
(TOSLink does use a visible light source, right?)

3) Has he checked for moving day dirt inside the output port?

All games will output audio through the TOSLink port. For regular PlayStation
and PS2 games, it will be stereo with the possibility of Dolby Pro Logic. Some
PS2 games have 5.1 Dolby Digital on the FMV cutscenes, but goes to Pro Logic
during normal gameplay. On select PS2 games, the audio is output as DTS 4.0,
DTS 4.1, and DTS 5.1 during actual gameplay when set to do so in the game menu
(GTA: Vice City, EA Sports NHL 2003).

In any case, the optical output will work with any game. - Reinhart

Did you observe a light directly from its source or only at the other end of
the cable?

Did you accidentally bend the cable too sharply or crush it? TOSLink cables
can be destroyed if they are bent at a sharp angle. Try a different cable.

BTW, unlike wires, an optical signal is not as critical as an electrical signal
is when it comes to transmission through a cable. A Recoton optical cable will
work just as well as an expensive Monster Cable with those useless gold plated
ends. Just so long as it's decent, it will work well.

Gold plated ends on an optical cable ... you can't get more gimmicky than that.

OK, thanks everybody for the suggestions. I should have said in the
original post that I tried 2 different toslink cables, neither worked
with PS2 but both worked with my DVD player and replayTV. Typically
when one end is plugged into the PS2 you can see the light on the
other end -- no joy here. I also made sure the setting for optical
output was on, and (even though it makes no difference) was playing
SSX3 which supports DTS (and has worked for me in the past.)

Does anybody know an easy way to look inside the machine and see if
the optical assembly might be damaged, what would you look for?
Warranty is not an issue any more. When I said "moved" what I really
should have said was "flew back and forth from the Persian Gulf on a
helicopter with the PS2 in my luggage" so I am guessing internal
damage may be the culprit.

Hmm, might have been dry joints that broke.

Try reflowing everything relating to the optical output with flux.
