Operation of analogue and digital circuits

Hi, can somebody please point me in the right direction to answer the following question.
Explain the operation of an analogue electronic circuit and a digital electronic circuit.
I know about the difference in wave forms but I'm not sure what they want.

Consider that most electronic switching devices have something akin to the following three modes of operation:

• Cut-off
• Saturation
• Some other thing in between

Look for how these apply to both types of circuits.
