Onkyo TX-810 problem

M

Michael Hoffman

Hi,
My wife's 15-year old ONKYO TX-810 has developed what seems to be a power
problem. It turns itself on and off every few seconds, eventually leading to
a total shutdown.

We took it into an electronics shop and they told us that the power supply
needed some new solder joints. Not too expensive, so we said "sure".

Then they came back and said it didn't fix the problem -- now we needed a new
"Display Circuit Assembly". Onkyo says this part is no longer manufactured.

Now the electronics store says there is nothing they can do, and want us to
pay for the original repair.. even though it didn't fix anything!

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is the DCA an actual part? What does it
have to do with power issues?

And finally, do you think I should take the receiver to a different shop?

(This shop is listed on ONKYOs site as an authorized service center, so I
assumed they were honest. Were my assumtpions wrong?)

Thanks,
Michael Hoffman

If you took the set to the Onkyo authorized service, this is about the best
you can do! The manufactures are normally very picky about who they
contract to do their work.

What you can do, is get the Onkyo part number for the part you need, and
start searching for it yourself. You can first start by calling Onkyo
directly, and see what they say. Then you can also do a search on the net,
using search engines, to see if there are any sites or listings that would
have what you are looking for.

You have to consider that after a set is about 5 to 7 years old, most
manufactures will no longer have parts for it.

They can't make you pay for the complete repair if they didn't fix it - I
don't see how. I've seen 810's with bad solder connections, I'm suspicious
of their diagnosis on the display tube.
