No sound from Panasonic rx-ed50 boombox

I have a Panasonic RX-ED 50 boombox. I wanted to install a Lithium polymer battery in it. Since it can also operate on 8 D cells, I tried connecting a lithium battery (3 cell 11.1v 1500mA cell into battery compartment. As it did not function using lithium battery, I removed it and then tried running using power cable. The boombox switches ON, but there is no sound. Radio switches on, scan stations, it plays CD, but no sound.
Can someone tell me what could have gone wrong and help to troubleshoot?

Did it work properly before you put the lithium battery in?.
Two easy things to check initially. Are the speakers ok? And are the connector/s from the PCB to the speakers inserted correctly?.

EDIT. Does the sound work with headphones?
