Newbie has ITI Caretaker; wants to know if all receiver/transmitter set works

Hello
I have a Caretaker ITI alarm panel and control pad. I want to go
wireless. Is a generic (Ademco, et al.) sensor transmitter/receiver
pair compatible with the panel? It's for my parents' Christmas and I
can do this or get a used PowerMax (?)wireless off Ebay.
Thanks
Ken
Email me on this as I don't get in here much

Boy are you lookin for trouble asking for advise from this newgroup.

If your a DIYer be sure to closey investigate (primarily if you buy online)
any of the alarm sellers. You wouldnt want to buy from someone whose
sideline is understanding your alarm system for the purpose of exploiting it
later by knowing your codes or maintenance access numbers. They could call
up your
alarm and do any number of things to disable it or render it ineffective
without your knowledge..ever.
Be wary of those who do not have a brick and mortar store. When I was
shopping and using this newsgroup some online dealers advertised a ASA
certification with a picture of a ASA eblem shown on their website. It
gives a good first impression but when you look into it you find out that it
was nothing more then some....guy.... creating a website to supposedly post
complaints, with no entrys of complaints or followthru. It was analagous
to someone flashing a police badge that turns out to be fake.
The ASA moniker is a badge without any accreditation and surely this is
misleading and potentially a scam.
Some of the free advice you get is not because of someones unselfish need to
make the world a better place to live. Most are giving you advice on the
hope of getting a sale or...."other" information. Listen but dont act on
the advice
until you can confirm or gain some trust in the source by researching them.

Sometimes you can learn a lot about sellers by plugging in email address or
screenname into a Google search of past news postings. You will be
surprized at what you find
out bout some offering to outfit your alarm. You would think there would be
laws against those kind of people having access to somthing as important as
personal home security. This is a very unregulated online business, and
especially risky for something as important as your
home security.

good luck.

Hello
Thanks for the honest reply; I appreciate your candor. Now for those
LESS honest (or alarm dealers saying "Just let us put it in for you"
or "Just buy a new one from US")read further:

I want to put in the alarm myself. There is no reason in heck, with
the Radio Shack DIY alarms out there; that I cannot. I do not want to
pay someone x dollars an hour for this. I have every right to do it
myself.

In fact I managed to get the panel to halfway work in a wired
configuration.

All I want to know is if I can take pretty well anyone's receiver and
transmitters- that are compatible with one another- and use them with
the alarm panel I have.

If I buy a second hand wireless panel and sensors I will NOT put it on
a telephone line unless I can assuredly purge the access code out of
its memory. If I end up buying a new one it will cost me only 200.00
or so (250 or 300 with extra sensors) at Lowe's.

Thanks
Ken

Here we go again....

That is correct. If you have a modicum of skill with simple tools and a
little patience you can install and service most alarm systems.

Mr. Bass:
Thanks for honestly answering this. The Lowe's unit is a Home
Sentinel. I may knock around Ebay for the ITI units but the easy way
is to get the Sentinel, lock stock and barrel.
Thanks
Ken

Hi Ken,
No problem.

I'm not familiar with "Home Sentinel." It might be a store model given to a
common brand or it could be "hardware store" quality. If it's the former
you may be fine using it. If it's the latter, you'll probably be
disappointed. If you decide to go with the Lowes unit, post whatever
information is on the package first. Perhaps we can figure out if it's a
worthwhile product.

Regards,
Robert
