New to electronics, making wireless door lock

I have a project in my head, a standard door lock with a wireless remote. when you press the remote the lock closes automatically. not much research has gone into this just yet. i have a very brief understanding of electronics but enough to get by i think.
the main thing i am struggling with is the wireless remote and how it will/should work.
has anyone got any basic info for me?

also a good electronic textbook i could look at getting?

For simplicity you could use a wireless door bell stripped down for the relevant parts.

I suppose the mechanical interface between receiver and lock will be the most complicated part.

One can get a varity of channel number output wireless control units from Ebay starting around $8-$10. Differing voltages, with or without cases, ac,dc. Operate via key fob. Too easy.....
