I wonder if the static could have damaged it while I was putting it
into the housing?

Schematics for a floppy drive? You have no chance whatsoever IME- they were
never generally available AFAIK. Fixing it will likely be a non-starter
anyway due to the fact that spares are generally not available.
Those standard PC floppy drives with memory card readers tend to use laptop
sized floppies inside, maybe you could take one out the housing and fit it
inside your laptop if the interface is the same or perhaps find a scrap
laptop on eBay for spares.
Failing that, get a USB floppy drive, or get someone to dump your floppies
onto CDRom or a USB memory dongle- floppies are long dead and drives are
often omitted from computer builds these days.
