Need Experts Advice On Soldering Irons

so anyway as always I am trying to make both mechanical and electronic design and I thought to myself how about making an EP soldering iron. with his in mind I thought of finding things that make or break a soldering iron for people.
I would like to know several things
  1. what wattage are you looking at
  2. gun or pencil style (or other if there is one)
  3. solder feed or not
  4. possible changes to design like solder through the centre or new tip type etc
This is for EVERYONE not just the experienced. I would love new people to have a say too so I can see what is possible to do to help teach new people basics.

The following list has already been included as standard
  1. temperature control
  2. flexible heat chord
I really want to know what people think makes or breaks a soldering iron (and I mean that by marketing terms not hammer to the end lol)

Good heat capacity, or alternately, the ability to get energy to the tip quickly.

Next on my list is light weight, balance, comfort, and with a light and flexible cable that doesn't get in the way.

so just from a design aspect heat cartridge close to the tip is advantageous or ability to hold heat like ceramic or something that retains heat.
Light weight I am assuming 50 grams?
balance is also a questionable item where do you want it balanced? in the dead centre? where you hold it? or somewhere else?
Comfort is something that I could easily make as there is a possibility for something similar to a rubber grip
lastly the cable that doesn't get in the way might be hard for my special design unless I use something like a hook of to the side that keeps that chord up high.
the design I am going with is semi new currently I am looking at 8-10 chords coming out from the pen tip but heat shrink will bind them together. don't foresee it being thicker than mains chord but will assess it when I get the base unit sorted.

Yes, the closer the source of heat and the measurement of temperature is to the tip, the better the iron will be able to maintain temperature.

The higher the power, the faster the iron will be to respond, and the greater the energy you'll be able to transfer to the joint once the heat required gets anywhere near the amount of heat stored in the tip itself.

the greater the heat capacity of the tip, the longer it will take to heat up. Conversely, it will also make the tip slower to cool down when under "load"

that's pretty light. Check out the TS100. It isn't perfect, but it's pretty good.

balance and comfort are more of a "feel" think once the soldering iron gets light enough that you're not expending effort moving it around.

Comfort is something that I could easily make as there is a possibility for something similar to a rubber grip

Keeping the handle cool and having a handle that fits well in your hand are probably the most important. It's also important that there is no danger of your hand slipping down the shaft onto the hot bits.

I hope the chords are pleasant to the ear. :-D

thanks bluejet for the hijack to post a completely unrelated video that has next to no signifgance to anything electronics related. it is a pleasure to ask a serious question and have someone do that as it makes it more "FUN" to sift through garbage to get the answers I was originally posting to get
