Anybody remember what it was before that "older" one, and when that one
was dropped?

Back in the '60's, until (I don't remember), it was a pair of angular
block letter "N"s, one upright "N", the other on its side "S". sort of
like the wonderful "SUN" logo.

My impression is that the logo changed from the old horizontal
parallel S squiggle to the new stylised N, sometime after mid 1994,
just over mid-way through the tenure of CEO Gil Amelio.

This photo June '94 4004 device shows the old logo

It seems that the first use of the Stylized N by National
Semiconductor may have been in June 1994.
