Multiplying Voltages?

I am trying to design a circuit that will multiply two voltages together like a voltage controlled amplifier but I am not sure how to go about doing this, any help would be appreciated?

Is your intent to design a circuit around a core multiplier chip such as the MPY534, or try to duplicate the circuitry within multiplier chip itself?

I would like to understand how the circuitry works rather than relying on an IC it gives me much more flexibility to change any parameters.

Well I am designing an amplitude modulator for an AM transmitter, so I need to multiply the voltages of two sine waves together.

Google amplitude modulator, look up Gilbert cells - they are just one way of multiplying small signals.
