can anyone tell me how to read mov's (disk type) and a way to test?

There is no absolute test, they generally fail due to over-voltage and the failure is visible, if no number on it, the working voltage and circuit design it is protecting comes into consideration.
A VOM ohm meter will usually register open circuit or high resistance if good
