Monitor is blank and makes a snapping sound

I have a Dell monitor (the exact type escapes me for the moment, but I can
check it out if necessary) which no longer works. If it is turned on, but
the computer is not, nothing seems to be the problem, as the LED seems to be
working correctly. If the computer is turned on, however, the monitor stays
blank; instead I hear the monitor repeatedly make a snapping sound,
similar to that of a light bulb burning out or a firecracker going off.

Does anyone know what the problem might be and whether it is worth repairing
or getting it repaired?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a high voltage arc. Probably not worth getting repaired and its
not advisable for non-trained personnel to work on such a problem.

This is most likely high voltage arching. This type of fault should be left
for the very experienced. Some possible causes are a defective HV
multiplier, defective CRT, and maybe some components on the CRT board that
deal with the G2 and focus bias.

You may have a buildup of dust and dirt within. The High voltage may be
jumping accross all the dust and dirt. You may try to carefully remove
the back off the monitor, and with compressed air blow all the dirt and
dust out of the monitor. You must make sure it is unplugged, and be
careful because there is probably some High Voltage stored in the
capacitors. This may work, it has for me in the past, but it does not
always solve the problem. If it does work, it may also be temporary, and
it may begin to arc, and snap once again. It is worth a try, but be
very careful. Good Luck
