Mammie wants new computer ;) :)

Hello,

Mammie wants new computer...

I am not sure what mammie wants... but I know what I want... I want a quiet
computer that can even play company of heroes without running hot or without
behaving like a jet plane.

So now a serious question to the audience:

What is the state of the art in x86/x64 energy efficient processor
technology ?

Same question for gpu/graphics card:

What is an energy efficient gpu that can run DX11 games or at least DX9 ?

Mammie is also doubting between laptop and desktop... it will probably be a
desktop... but I would also appreciate answers for laptops as well...

Though the whole idea of dropping an expensive laptop on the ground scares
me ;)

Also mammie gets dizzy nowadays... so laptop might be too risky ! ;)

Bye,
Skybuck.

This is a nice chart:

Though I am a bit surprised that the athlon 64 2600+ runs at the same watt
as athlon x2 3800+

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_CPU_power_dissipation

My mother currently has the athlon 64 2600+ with a hp hood over it, I don't
know exactly what the hood does... but so far the hardware seems to still be
functioning... then again PC isn't used as heavily as I use my athlon x2
3800+
which also has 65 watts...

I do notice the cpu running hot at full load... and starts to increase
motherboard temperature... then again added gpu activity could also make
situations worse...

Personally I am unhappy with the amd athlon x2 3800+... I think it runs to
hot... so I will probably not buy another AMD processor... I might switch to
an intel processor which runs cooler perhaps at 35 watts or so...

Question is... will that actually help ?! I hope so... but I am not sure...

Also a good but not too hot gpu might be necessary for IE 9 acceleration in
feature so seems wise/good to have that too.

The Core 2 Duo processors seem nice according to that chart...

Also core I5 and such...

Anybody have one and have experience with core 2 duo or core i5 ?

Can they run games well ?

Bye,
Skybuck.

Only thing left to do is find a nice graphics card which doesn't run to
hot...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_NVIDIA_graphics_processing_units

And ofcourse is nvidia supported with superior opengl drivers and direct x
and cuda support ! ;) :)

And which is pretty recent to benefit from latest newest tech...

The lowest watt on the graph is:

GeForce GT 420 (OEM)

However perhaps it's not out yet... so I might have to wait for a review or
choose another one...

Also it says OEM so not sure if it's available on websites/shops/stores ;)

Bye,
Skybuck.

^ This one seems a little bit old, this one is probably better and has a
review:

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gt-430-review/16

It's apperently "silent" so that's nice... doesn't consume too much heat...
but it's still a bit much... hmmm... at least not as much as those other
high end cards...

It will probably run idle most of the time so could be nice ! ;)

And it's not too expensive... at least I think... just 70 euro/bucks for a
graphics cards... that's cheap in my book ! ;) :)

It can't be used for resolution of 1920x1200... but maybe mammie is happy
with 1024x768 or so... though a little bit more would be nice... ;) and this
card can probably do it ;)

Bye,
Skybuck.

Case and power supply make a lot of difference. Antec makes some
very nice quiet cases and power supplies. I use their Sonata III
myself; if you want something that will also look nice as a media
computer, look at their NSK 2480).

If you go SSD for disk, that will be both quieter and faster than
a rotating drive. And reasonable capacities (120 GB, say) are
not all *that* expensive. If you do software development like
I do, a good SSD is *really* nice :)

Several people on AnandTech's forums recommend the AMD Radeon 5770
family as "very quiet and can be found for under $140" with more
than adequate performance for gaming. The PowerColor passively
cooled 5750 is supposed to be the fastest passively cooled card
available.

And as for processor, minimizing the power required minimizes the
heat, allowing for a slower/quieter processor-fan. Go with an
Intel Westmere I5 processor here, I think, and a made-for-quiet
fan like the Zalman CNPS10X.

John
He has been buying pc's from the brand TROLLOMATIC.
Those have been outsourced UNDERTHEBRIDGE, where
you get much more TROLLOBITS for your money.

I don't want to be mean to Skybuck, who I am sure is a very fine
fellow, but it had occurred to me that we have here an apparent
opportunity to improve the general quality of life. Rather than
sending computers that still work but that have outlived their
usefulness to a landfill, we should create a sort of recycling center,
where people who have a much higher than average consumption rate can
obtain computers at low or no cost. Such people can then continue
with their fearless and tireless experimentation without fear of
financial ruin.

Such a facility exists already. It is ebay, or Craigslist, or
freecycle.org in decending order of likely selling price.
