Lind Electronics 12V Laptop Adaptors (Unsolicited Endorsement)

S

Scott Willing

Hey folks,

Been shopping for a while for an auto/air power adaptor for my Dell
laptop. Finally decided to pay a bit more than some for a Lind
Electronics ("LLPwr" in Europe) unit. I'm out in the boonies so I have
to rely on web/mail order, and rarely get the chance to examine
something in the flesh before I've purchased it. I've quickly learned
that a few dollars saved on the price of an item can quickly be lost
on the shipping to return it when it proves less than impressive.

No such disappointment with the Lind adaptor. It's such a rare
pleasure these days to discover a product that imparts an impression
of quality the moment you pick it up. It has a simple extruded
enclosure with plastic end caps, a couple of jacks and a single LED,
but the the unusual degree of precision in the fitting of the parts is
obvious.

Of course, a nicely-executed case is hardly the complete measure of
quality for a complex switching power adaptor, and I can't claim to
have put the thing through any rigorous testing.

But I'm moved to post this testimonial because of what happened when I
sent a couple of technical questions to the manufacturer. I'm a tech
writer and I have some background in hardware design, so I have a
habit of sending annoying questions to equipment manufacturers. I
normally expect to be ignored.

Not only were Lind's replies prompt, frank and detailed, but after a
bit of discussion they offered to go well above and beyond the call of
duty and to exchange my fully-functional unit for one with custom
properties of a fairly unique nature.

From a purely technical standpoint I know that this wasn't a big deal
for them to do. However, it is extraordinary to have someone go that
extra step. I hesitate to mention it, lest I'm responsible for a flood
of similar requests, but otherwise I wouldn't have much of story to
tell.

Once upon a time this sort of service was common I guess, but it's the
certainly exception rather than the rule.

I have absolutely no connection to Lind Electronics other than as
described, and this account was in no way solicited or compensated.

Always nice to hear good feedback on customer service.

I looked at those adaptors for my recently purchased Toshiba laptop but the
$99.99 price was a bit steep. I decided to go with a Seven Star brand
adaptor that I bought off eBay for $19.00 which works perfectly and is
adjustable to power my 19 volt laptop as well as my daughter's 15 volt
laptop.

BTW I bought the DC power supply because the AC adaptor that came with the
computer makes noise on the phone line when running off the inverter, making
it impossible to get a decent internet connection speed.

Hey GB,
There's your solution $19 on EBay and not my $79 <G>
Heck for $19 I might grab one for my other laptop.

Care to give us a hint? If they make one with special features it
might be more interesting...

I'm kinda partial to the Targus universal ones (the DC plug you put on
the end of the wire programs the voltage and current limit with a
couple of resistors) as they work with many different devices
(laptops, PDAs, phones, etc), but they are kinda pricey as well...

Thanks for the review!
