LEDs and Materials for light

Hello all,
I am currently working on a project to light up white stripes on a black and white striped tie. Im going to use neo pixel leds to light up the white striped part to change the color of that stripe (green, blue, red). I want to put a material inside the tie so I can light up the sections of white. Im not sure what type of material I can use. I was thinking the type they use in cars speedometers, like the stick to show how fast you're going. Or maybe acrylic. I'm not really sure what to use so if anyone has any other inputs on what material I could use inside the tie, I would appreciate it!

I forgot, Im using the material to diffuse the light so it doesn't look like one dot on the sections of white.

It's tricky to do because of the required space..
I would suggest looking at EL-Wire or EL-Sheet prior to see if perhaps it is a better option.
(Thinner, more energy efficient, dimmer)

Otherwise, you may have to use a transparent or semitransparent piece of plastic as a light-pipe. Put some thin white fabric in front to help diffuse the light a little further. (You can find some pretty small addressable LEDs if you can't find a 'neopixel' small enough... or you could even make it from scratch with SMD LEDs of the 3 colors. Which I would suggest as well unless you want to change the color of each stripe independently)

I should have mentioned that the EL-Sheet / EL-Wire options would limit you a little on color choices.
