LED Dot Matrix with HD44780 compatible

Hello All,

I am trying to drive 5x7 led dot matrix modules with a HD44780 compatible driver. I have a ready made circuit for something else that has an LCD connection, so I cant change the circuit.

This guy apparently did it:

But, I cant understand most of what the site says as it is in French (literally) and the google translation doesnt clear it up. Also, I cant seem to get in touch with the guy.

As LCDs work with AC, maybe I can use XOR gates to use the DC to drive the LEDs, then again, I dont know if it would work.

Any ideas?
