My laserjet 5L outputs a fused all black page whether it's doing the
engine test, self-test print test, or the windows 98 test print. Any
info is appreciated. Thanks.

I think that is no light reaching the drum. Used to see this in a local
factory - half the page would go black when half of the laser output was
obscured by dust. The laser scanner is usually a flatish black box with
warning labels, often at the top of the printer, and somewhere on it will be
a slot where the light is supposed to come out. This will have an automatic
shutter that closes when the printer cover is open. Try cleaning through
the slot, although if it has suddenly fialed, it may be that the lamp has
died or the shutter is stuck closed.

Good luck

You didn't say whether the symptom occurred suddenly or after you had
done anything to the printer, such as changing a cartridge or
something else.

Google search turns up several references to this problem at
fixyourownprinter.com. Some references refer specifically to the
Laserjet 6L but may also be relevant to the 5L.

For example;

http://fixyourownprinter.com/printer/8/7460.html
http://fixyourownprinter.com/printer/4/3528.html

There may be others but this will give you a start.
