Kids Electric Motorbike

Hello all - hope someone on here may be able to help.., just got a kids electric motorbike from my brother - it is a little 12v thing - it seems to work fine - goes in forward and reverse etc - except it only goes a meter or so then stops. U then wait a couple of seconds then it goes again. And so on. Any ideas on what it could be? All wiring etc looks in good condition - and battery doesn't seem to be getting too hot.

Hi Leighroybrown, we can try.

Your description looks like an overload protection is active. Please answer a few questins to help us localize the issue:

• How is the bike controlled? Is the battery simply connected to the motor using some switches for forward and reverse, or is there an electronic controller in between?
• If there's a controller, does it get hot?
• Can you measure the current drawn by the motor when it runs (do you have a multimeter)?
• The battery is fully charged ( I know, dumb question, but...)

Hi Harald - thx for your reply. After a bit more investigation, I found a small black circuit breaker - and as you suggest - yes this seems to be tripping after a few seconds. It has two batteries - they are both supposed to be 12v - when the bike is going, one stays at around 12 but the other drops to about 8.

It has a switch for forward / reverse and another for high / slow speed. Then there is an 'accelerator' as such to make it go. All the electronics seem fairly simple - but the electric motor does sound a bit noisy - possibly something in there is making the circuit breaker trip - or the circuit breaker is faulty?

Try operating the car with the wheels off the ground and see if it takes the same time (or longer) to trip.

The battery dropping to 8V may be nearing death. (2 dead cells?)
