Kidde Model 0910 Smoke Alarm: Problems With ?

R

Robert11

Hello:

I had installed a model 0910 Kidde smoke alarm.

This is supposedly the latest and greatest ionization model, and also has
the
sealed, 10 year Li-Ion battery.

The unit is on the ceiling in an upstairs hallway, and from everything I can
tell, this is a dry, and most
normal location. No undue dust, temp., odors, etc.

Anyway, the unit would give 3 to 4 chirps every day or two, at totally
random times.
No correlation with time of day, meal cooking, etc.
Truly random.

Just 3-4 chirps, then nothing until next time, 24 to 48 hrs later.

Called Kidde, and they were nice enought to send me a new unit.
They had absolutely no idea what the 3-4 chirps might mean, or why.

The new unit is doing the same behavior.

I guess I will just find a different brand to put up, but am wondering why,
with two units, what might be happening.

- Any service history or recalls with the model 0910 ?
- Any ideas on ?

Thanks,
Bob

you really should use photoelectric, not ionization type. they are better
for most residential type fires.

I'm sure many residential type fires were indeed better with ionization
type smoke alarms... ;-)

Most 110/9V smoke detectors give a short chirp to indicate a low (or missing) 9-Volt backup battery. However, the ones I've used
all give a single chirp and it usually repeats every few minutes. Some repeat more frequently.

BTW, most professional installers prefer photoelectric smokes for residential alarms as they respond faster to the most common type
of fire in a residential environment. Ionization smokes may tend to false more often as well.

Don't take this the wrong way, but are you absolutely sure that its the new
smoke detectector thats chirping.

Almost every installer can tell you a story of how they have been called out
to a service call by a homeowner who is adamant that they have a smoke
detector chirping, only to find out thats its some other device such as an
old cell phone, pager etc or even an old smoke detector hidden in the corner
of a closet.

Boy, can I relate to that !! Even had angry clients pull their system
down totally to find the chirping is coming from a CO detector nearby
with a low battery.

BTW, there are some of these cheap AC smokes that chirp, and also
speak to you saying "low battery". I have seen some of this type
installed up here in new homes recently. A thing to note; if you
change the battery, it will still continue to warn you of a low
battery unless you actually set the smoke detector into alarm with the
test button. It seems the unit doesn't "see" the new higher voltage
battery unless it goes into alarm. Gotta wonder....

Just in case you come across another, you might want to try the
following.

When you pull out the old battery, short out the connectors that touch
the battery terminals. I don't know how the circutry is set up but
many times it's just that the voltage hasn't actually reached zero. I
guess there's someithing in these units that requires that the new
battery restart the low bat sensing circuit from zero. It may or may
not work but it's worth a try .

i always tell them to replace ALL the batteries not just the one...and with
Duracell not the cheapo Walgreen ones.
