Kenwood sat nav DNX5280BT keeps rebooting!

I have a Kenwood DNX5280BT (similar to US version DNX6980 I believe)http://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/car/nav_mm/nav/DNX5280BT/
Last week I stalled my car reversing, and when I restarted it the system shut off and restarted as usual... but then cycled restarting and then turning of like in this YouTube video...

I have tried a few things including the reset button - but nothing has cured it so far...

It restarts about every 20 seconds, and also when the system is off and the key even out of the ignition you can hear a fan start up and run for about 20 seconds and the do it all over again.

It is possible to turn the screen off and back on with the main power button - but this is the only thing I can find that works...

Any ideas?

Hi Graphite, the video is fine now.
What camera did you connect to the system? Is it the proper/recommended accessory or third party?
How is the camera wired for power? External wiring or from the system itself?

I say this because many 12v cameras have quite a range of amperages from say, 250ma to 1amp. (example).
You may have a high amperage camera of 550ma and your system can only supply 300ma for example.

I think you have misunderstood... I don't have a camera attached at the moment...

The problem is just that the system does nothing more than show the boot screen and then turn off and continues cycling like this until I turn it off at the power button...

Last week I stalled my car reversing CAMERA, and when I restarted it the system shut off and restarted as usual.
Sorry, I accidently inserted the missing word in red.:)
I thought your brain was going faster than your fingers, as happens with me all the time.

Have you followed the correct wiring/installation instructions? With no shortcuts!!

hard to understand how that could happen ... a voltage spike being about the only thing
why it didn't do it on any one of the many times the car was started ... who knows

what has happened to it ... again difficult to say ... anything from damaging the power circuitry to
zapping the microprocessor ??

OK,OK, I am prize plumb today...:)
Not only do my fingers go slower than my brain, I can't read either...
Stalled, STALLED the car.......I read INstalled.... Sorry again..
I will say NO more..

I got some feedback from a local Kenwood specialist...

I don’t recall having the exact problem you are having but have experienced similar issues with similar Kenwood products.
Firstly I would just double check its not a voltage issue, possibly try connecting it directly to a different vehicle or battery. If this fails, we have experienced a complete discharge may work. Disconnect the main power plug for at least 24 hours, 48 hours is often better! However It does sound like it has developed a software issue, which may need returning to Kenwood service for an overall & update. If this is the case please bring it down to us at the shop, we will sort every thing out

Yes, it does appear that you have searched far and wide on this problem!
The Youtube comment is probably correct. And as Davenn replied earlier, it has fried something. And it aint chicken!

You said that if you use the power button it works. Does it work correctly using the power button?
ie: With ignition on and off?
Do you remember the install procedure and the wiring? You could have 3 or 4 positive connections. IGN, ACC, AUX, etc.
Have you checked all the fuses for each feed source?

They have sent it off to 'Kenwood' despite having their own repairs technician... Only it doesn't go to Kenwood - it goes to another audio repair shop...

I got the news yesterday... £125 + VAT - can't cost anywhere near that to make a new one

Anyway I've given the go-ahead - hopefully they will add a turbocharger to it or something for that price ;)

When you collect it, hold it in your hands and ask for the Kenwood documentation for the repair!
Ask what the problem was!
Then you can barter over the price.
I would be fuming!!

Keep us updated

Unfortunately I'm stuck really - I have asked all over the net - no suggestions at all - No one else will deal with it... They told me the price and I either accept it and pay up and look happy or I say I don't want it repaired and leave it with them as it's useless - or I pay the P&P to have it returned in the condition I sent it away in :(

These things seem like mobile phones nowadays 2 yrs life and then you're supposed to buy the latest updated model

The repair slip says:

Re-write flash ROM, Update Software. Soak tested All OK

£150!

Wil install it tomorrow...
