jellybean SMT diode?

W

Walter Harley

I'm entering the surface-mount fray, so I'm putting together a collection of
SMT parts: resistors, caps, etc., for prototyping and repairs.

I need a "jellybean" switching diode, along the lines of a 1N4148. No
special requirements. However, I see that there are a lot of different case
styles available, and I'm not sure which ones are commonly used.

I was surprised to see that many SMT diodes come in what looks like a
cylindrical case, which seems like it would be really hard to handle without
it rolling away from where I place it - but if that's the standard, I'll
learn to cope.

Can anyone recommend a part that would be very commonplace, inexpensive,
widely available, and relatively easy to work with by hand?
