INSTEK Function Generator

T

Terry Pinnell

I'm tentatively bidding on ebay for an INSTEK FG-8016G Function
Generator, in 'full working order'. Anyone have any idea what a
reasonable price range might be please (UKP or USD)?

Function generators - for some odd reason - tend to keep
their value and always sell at rather high prices, compared
to oscilloscopes for instance, which can sometimes be had
for practically nothing.

A new one, with comparable specs, costs perhaps $250. My
personal limit would be $100, if I needed one. Of course,
if I need it badly, I'd pay more ;)

Thanks, Frank. Surprisingly, at 1.82 USD/UKP, that's almost exactly
what I'd decided so far would be my max bid (55 UKP), plus another 10
UKP for postage.

Closed last night for 62 UKP (113 USD). I stuck at 51 UKP. Relieved I
didn't win, as I don't really need it and have no room for it
anyway...<g>

Like I said, these things still sell at ridiculous prices. Sometimes
there are 20MHz oscilloscopes, Tenma 72-3060, at Ebay that have a
function generator build in. I don't know if you need an oscilloscope
too, if so, it may be interesting to watch for that, although it may
take a while before one pops up. Item 2591728624 was the last one
that went for $100. Ask for USPS surface shipping, when buying from
the US, this seems to be cheapest option for heavier items.

Hello Terry,
I thought you had a good function generator already, the
one that Tony Williams repaired for you some time ago.
What happened to that unit?
I remember you said it was really good and that was
why you wanted to repair it and keep it.
What is the main differences between your old unit
and the one you were bidding on?
Just interested so that I know what to look out for
myself should I come across a bargain.
There is ham field day coming up at the end of Feb
at a place called Wyong north of Sydney, I always
come away with boatanchor test gear. It is a fettish
of mine. I just can't resist old test gear bargains. :)

Regards,

John: My answer is your last sentence! Well, more accurately, I'm
*tempted* by them. The PM5134 is excellent, far better spec than the
INSTEK, and is working fine. I suppose I had the vague idea of a
backup, especially as I was about to get the covers off and expose the
instrument to my risky tinkering <g>. (Separate thread 'Changing a
mains supply link'.) Anyway, who says shopping has to be rational?
