Installing Medical alert systems real pain to firefighters

N

Nick Markowitz

Several times this past month a customer of mine who has Multiple Building
Apartment Complexes have had to chase there tails along with the Fire Depts.
responding becuse an IDIOT Medical Alert Installer has put in a smoke along
with the Medical Alert System in an elderly residents apartment , and
Central Station did not give clear info to 911 center. As to what apartment
was having alarm and Firefighters thought they were responding to a building
Fire Alarm. To make matters worse one of there apartments had a window
broken when Medics responded and could not gain entry only to find no
medical condition no one home and no medical alert system it had been
disconnected by a previous tennant who never let Central Station know that
they moved.
My clients have now sent letters to all tennants that they are to be
notified if a system has been installed and there Maintenance Emergency
Number is to be notified by Central Station as well as 911 so problems can
be eliminated or AHJ is going to start fines .
It apears who ever has been installing these systems is some one who is just
a salesman with no training and has been causing headeaches all over Western
Pa. by not giving clear information. Needless to say AHJ's are pissed and
looking for them.

Good luck finding him. He's in Brazil.

Sounds like the outfit that was working in Central Pa. a few years ago.
Heard some people paid up to $5000 for a little box and a smoke detector.
Once things started to heat up for them (the authorities looking for them)
they cut the phone lines, locked the doors and vanished.

It is sad when this stuff happens because it makes the rest of "US" look
bad. I hope that somebody gets caught big time.

If you're servicing the building, you should make the building management
aware of what's going on. They should be posting a notice that requires any
installation involving medical alert or fire detectors to be cleared through
their office. Granted most of the stuff these medic alert guys sell are
plug and play, the installer/sales guy should be ensuring the station
they're using is dispatching to the right address. God-damn unprofessional
if you ask me.

They are now putting it in there leases you have to report if you have such
a system and are checking with all current tennats. To try and stop the
insanity I have mentioned this to the other landlords i work with to and
they are looking into it as well so they do not have problems.
