also how hard is it to turn one of those cheap induction cookers into an induction heater? do i just have to reshape the coil or do i have to fiddle with the electronics?

Coils can take on other shapes, but you cannot stray too far from the original tuned frequency of the combined coil/capacitors.
I would be interested to know the size and value of the Caps used in those.

yeah i know if you change the turns on the coil it can cause problems. with induction heaters the tank caps have to withstand large currents and large
temperatures so they use film capacitors. so in the cheap induction cooktops they would most likely use cheap film caps.
