Ideas for triangulation of a small object within 6 feet

I'm looking to build a system that can detect the location of a tag within a 6 foot range to an accuracy of one or two inches. I have briefly looked into RFID sensors but I haven't found any that satisfy my needs. Does anybody have a suggestion?

You state triangulation, are you attempting to triangulate location in a 2-dimensional place, or in 3d space?
There has been some good work in optical recognition. You would require a camera, and some computer software. Extending this to 3D would be a little more difficult. Alternatively, you would need a method to measure distance from 3 or 4 probes to calculate the absolute position of an item in 3D space.. I do not have the experience to do this though.
