HP Deskjet Printer 400 black ink cartridge detection problems

I have an HP Deskjet which can print with a color cartridge perfectly,
but will not detect a new black ink cartridge and print with it. I
tried cleaning the connectors with a q-tip. Does anyone have any
ideas on what has gone wrong and how to fix it?

I ran into the issue of a reman cartridge not working - maybe the same
issue. Try shimming under the cartridge with layers of paper to raise it
just a bit. My hypothesis was that the cartridge probably worked when it
left the reman place. And they probably usually work. So therefore it
should work in mine. The only thing left was that the pins weren't hitting
properly and shimming did the trick.
