how can i use a soundesign radio in germany?

hi,

I've bought a soundesign radio (from end 70s/early 80s) from ebay and I bought a US-voltage-converter, but the problem is that the clock doesnt move on, the radio works, but not the clock....is that normal? we have 50Hz instead of 60Hz in the USA, but shouldnt the clock then move slower instead of no movement?

greetings,

hi barathbushan,

no, the us voltage converter reduces the voltage to 110V...but the time of the radio runs slower now, because we have 50Hz instead of 60Hz I think...

To make the clock run right you'd need a crystal controlled inverter.
Maybe an American UPS could be used somehow, but there are inverters available that are meant to be used for running old 60Hz Hammond organs in europe.

If you can get your hands on a 3932160Hz crystal it's easy to connect it to one of the good old CMOS divider IC's and get a 60Hz square signal straight out.
Then using a couple of power transistors and a mains transformer in reverse, working off, say 12V, I'm sure it could be done at a tenth of the cost.
Or, the square signal could be filtered and fed into a small power amplifier and then through a mains transformer in reverse, doing the same job.

hi resqueline,

oh, thanks 4 info...I've searched the web and found one:
CRYSTAL 3.932160 MHZ 17PF 49UA
is that one right?
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=X013-ND
or this one?
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=X013-ND
or SMD?

http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=CM309S3.93216MABJCT-ND

hm, what would you say, if I would send you the crystal? would you like to help me, and build the circuit? I think I cant do that....I dont know enough to do it...what would be your price? I would really appreciate it...what do you think?

ps.: I could order all parts (if you tell me which ones), or maybe you can order and I would pay the needed money via paypal to you before...

The first two are right (and the same). Nice price. The SMD's will be a hassle to buy (call for price) and use.
Hmm, I'll have to think about that, I don't have much surplus energy. I guess you could use a ready boxed "plug & play" unit with warranty. I'll PM you if I find I can do it.

thank you very much, that would be really really nice if you could find the time...I would pay your effort....I'll have patience....I think the shipping costs are very high (18EUR) if the price is under a special limit...but I would pay the high shipping costs...okay, I'll look forward for your PM *hope* ^^

My 'puter has been online for the last two weeks but not me (except for banning some spammers now & then). Didn't mean to ignore anyone. I hope to find more time now.

Hi@all,

it seems the radio can't be switched to run in 60Hz without a new motor...I read an ad about the radio from the 70s where it is written that a 50Hz version has been produced too...so I would need this motor in 50Hz: Copal GC-1341 ..does anyone know where to get one? or has an idea which one I could use instead? thanks a lot...

bye
