Hitachi TV confused by RCA universal remote

J

Jem Berkes

We've got a 12 year old Hitachi television. Its primary remote control
stopped working recently (presumably due to damage over the years). The
Hitachi VCR's remote control was still able to control the television,
after pressing its TV mode selector.

I then got an RCA universal remote control to try with the TV. I used its
"code search" feature, but to no avail.

Now that itself isn't the big problem, since I can try other universal
remotes. The problem is that the Hitachi VCR remote control stopped working
immediately after trying the RCA universal remote's code search. My guess
would be that it put the Hitachi TV into an unusual state. The TV still
works with manual controls, but the (perfectly functional) VCR remote has
no effect upon it.

I tried unplugging the television in order to clear its memory but it
appears to have non-volatile storage of some kind. What else could have
happened here? Is there some known Hitachi trick to this?
