Help with inverter generator

Hello all,

I hope it's OK to ask my question here, and am thankful if anyone can answer it.

I recently bought an inverter generator off eBay, and am having an issue with it, possible with the sine wave output.

When I plug a mobile phone in it, it will charge, but the touch screen becomes unresponsive, and the phone will do random things like open apps, etc. This is not the case when I plug it into a different inverter generator or a wall outlet.

My question is, is the generator safe to use for sensitive electronic equipment like TV, PC, etc., or is it faulty and in need of returning?

Thanks,
Bermanc

Make/model? We can't guess.

Many claims for sine wave output are really 'modified sine wave' - it's cheating really. If the device states TRUE sine wave output you would need to prove this using an oscilloscope or just return it under warranty as not fit for purpose.

Sorry, didn’t know it was of consequence.

It’s a Gentrax 2kVA inverter:

What I’m wondering is, is the generator faulty and not safe to use, or is this just a symptom of the modified sine wave? Can I use the generator for fridge, fans, tv, etc., without damaging them? I don’t mind if I can’t use my phone while it’s charging so long as it’s safe to charge it.

Thanks for the reply.

That looks pretty 'responsible' and is likely to be as good a sine wave as you'll get from such a portable unit.

Try using the charger with an additional load connected (say a 100W lamp) to ensure the output voltage is getting proper regulation. The (extremely) small load of a simple phone charger might not allow the regulation circuitry to work properly.

I also note that the generator has a couple of 12V outputs - these would be MUCH more suited to using a phone charger (via the appropriate car-type adapter lead) and may resolve your issue without having to fit an extra load.

Hi again,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have tried running the inverter under load (light bulb, fan) with no difference.

I also have access to a Honda eu20i which causes no issues to the phone even without any additional load.

So I think either the inverter is not putting out a proper sine wave as it is advertised to do so, or it is faulty. How am I able to know the difference?

It does have a 12v output but not the car type. Just a funky two slot socket for charging 12v batteries.

I am concerned about charging my phone or running a tv or computer off it in the event of an extended power outage.

Thanks for you time.

Defo sounds like a defect then. The only true way to test would be to use an oscilloscope to monitor the output waveform for stability and purity - probably beyond most people's normal acquisition - so I'd be looking to instigate the warranty.
