help identifying part

I'm new to electronics and basically teaching myself. I'm trying to diagnose an issue with a particular boarding and I'm not sure what these components are, or their function. It's the very small almost diode looking part. Thsnks

The Q designation are transistors, the 2 pin designated R are resistors C capacitors.

The transistors and resistors are labeled, the capacitors are not..how do I know what the capacitance is supposed to be?

You can't really tell their capacitance unless you desolder them and measure them with a multimeter. SMD capacitors can be a real pain sometimes...

I didn't realize capacitors were made that small...do these ones puff and leak like the larger ones. If I take them out of circuit to test them it's going to be a real pain and I have no idea what the capacitance is supposed to be to know if they are good or bad..any tips or tricks on how to go about starting to diagnose a circuit? Or is it just go at it and test everything?

to be tested reliably, most parts would have to be removed
and for a beginner, as yourself, this would almost be guaranteed to destroy them

so what is the unit and what is wrong with it ?

I've done my fair share of removing components from circuits and testing and putting back. I've fixed a few power supply boards for tv's and such. What I'm working on here is a motor controller for a treadmill. I've already replaced the board so I know it is the issue and it just gives an error. I just wanted to play around with the old one and see if I could rebuild it.

Yeah now that Ive done some research I see its quite different. Almost seems a little impossible for a simple hobbyist to do at home

Hi There...this is the upper control (brain board) of the IFT AC Variable Drive, made by Advanced Drive Technology.
Your version of software shown relates to the Precor 932 Treadmill....yes?

DO NOT TOUCH those surface mount parts unless you want to kill that control board ;o) I know exactly what's wrong with your board....but I cannot place that info into this public forum for a couple of reasons. I will tell you that your fix has nothing to do with surface mount parts unless it was a catastrophic failure, which I see few of....you can contact me privately for help with it or if you'd like a replacement upper board for your IFT drive as we have both complete drives and boards for them and various software versions.
