Grundig VCR VS 7200 VPT gone nuts with error 21

Hi,

the VCR always tries to move the (empty) cassette tray up and down while
"21" blinks alternately with clock time. Some reactions from keys (symbols,
e.g. play, appear, but action is immediately cancelled). The thing makes
awful noises. Tried love and respect, but no result... ;-)
Does anyone know the error 21 and if it's repairable, before I buy a rather
costly service manual? I've got the machine from a repair shop which dumped
it, that's why I ask.

If a repair shop dumped it, then maybe it is not worth fixing.

well, yes, you're probably right...
maybe not worth the manual cost of 30+ Euro...
but what about the spirit of challenge? ;-)
