gold plated

Is there a good reason for a lot of electronics to be gold plated?

Low contact resistance, excellent corrosion resistance and excellent
solderability. And it looks cool and high tech. ;-)

Well, of course. That's what the audiophools want. I think if the
control buttons on a piece of audio equipment were gold plated, some
audiophool would buy it on the grounds 'it must be better' ;)

And very low thermoelectric potentials, always a problem in precision
measurements of very low voltages.

And they can charge a lot more for it. ;-)

oh, you mean like that monster wire that is 99.9999 OX free! and those
gold connectors and gold caps! ..yeah...

Gold has a lot of advantages. These are mostly because (A) it doesn't
corrode easily and (B) it is a soft metal.

c) it's a good electrical conductor

Those are good reasons for gold plating the _mating surfaces_ of
connectors. There is no reason (good or bad!) to gold plate the
outsides or other non-mating surfaces.

Sure, but it looks pretty in the impossible-to-open-without-destroying-it
bags.
