getting some input on a hybrid low watt low powered guitar amp

Okay so here's the deal. I have a velleman 7 watt amplifier That is put together but not getting any use It's based on tda2003 chip. This is working and I did have it paired with a velleman pre amp it was decent I could over drive the pre amp to get some gain and distortion. Well decent to me but not musically decent. So I found a guitar pedal based on an 12AU7 tube which drives both gain and tone. I plan to combine the tube booster pedal with my 7 watt amp. I figure I'm going to have a few issues from jump. The main design issue is that the tube pedal is a gain circuit and not a true pre amp. So in the end I may just be amplifying a gain circuit. IE getting distortion from low volumes and high volumes and not getting a gradual tube saturation as the "preamp" gain increases. Well I'm just brain storming right now but eventually I'm going to have to start experimenting with it on my bread board. I don't really want to reinvent the wheel so if any of you guys have any insight or experience I'm all ears. Thanks!
