Elk M1 or M1G????

K

kpm

I have been lurking for a month or so. I have been looking for an
alarm panel that offers strong integration with home automation. It
seems a few of you have the new Elk panel. I see most of the comments
on the "fully loaded" Gold model and not much discussion of the step
down M1. I think that the M1 would fit my modest home better but I
have a few questions on the following from the Elk website. The Elk
M1G has:

1. Advanced lighting options (pre-set dim, extended, levels, scenes)
2. Analog zone definitions supported
3. Additional capacity for transmission of serial ASCII strings
4. Larger capability for events (time & date) tasks, lights, outputs

Could anyone expand on the above? With regard to 1 and 2 how important
is this?
With regard to 3 it is clear that the M1G has more compared to the M1.
What is not clear is how much more. What does the M1 have with regard
to ASCII strings?
With regard to 4 the M1 manual says that the event capacity is 100.
This seems like a lot, but being a newbie I may be missing something.
Thoughts?

It does not appear that the panel has a UL listing yet but has been
pending for many months. Does this indicate a problem?

Any other thoughts/advice you have would be appreciated.

Sorry for the cross-post, I was not sure which group to post to.
TIA

I guess really it's a personal choice and how much you want it to do.

I went with the Gold and when they release the Zwave controller Add-on
I'm going to move all my lighting scenes to the Elk and off Homeseer.
As I'm having reliability issues. This alone is worth the added cost
to me as I have a smaller house where the m1 standard would be
adequate.

With regard to (1), if you plan on using any SwitchLinc modules
which support preset-dim codes, or X10 2-way modules which support
extended codes, the apparent absence of support for these codes
in the M1 will be a negative. But that won't be a problem if
you're planning on using only the inexpensive standard modules.
