Electronic timer motor

Hi all,

I'm a newb when it comes to programming anything electric, although I've been curious about it all my life. I've recently decided to start a project where I'd have a timer turn a motor.

Basically, my question is, can anyone give me advise on how to get a timer to turn this motor once the time is up?

What would I need, what are the things called and how to get it done. Any help is much appreciated.

Do you need a real time clock or just a time period on?
There are DIY electronic means or off the shelf timer etc, there is a lack of data to go any further!

Time period on (a few hours max).

Please tell me what other data you need for me to be able to supply it and make this a more pointed question.

Motor voltage
motor current
power supply for the timer circuit
location - indoors, outdoors, packaged for an office, open frame for a basement, etc.
your skill set - access to components, soldering, etc.

There are two time periods involved:
1) the delay (few hours max) before the motor switches on,
2) the period the motor stays on.
What triggers the start of the delay?
Is this a single trigger, or repeated?

Still very little info, but an easy off the shelf solution is a timer such as Irrigation/sprinkler or a Automotive block heater timer, both cheap and are RTC timers.
