Electronic supply, help.

Hello, does anyone know where I can find an electronics supplier?

I am thinks of opening a new business that sells portable chargers but I don't know where I can get a big amount of electronic components at once, so I can start mass producing my product.

Hate to send work overseas, but if you are to be mass producing these for sale you may want to prototype one, verify that all is as you wish then contract with a factory in china. That is where the majority of boards and electronics goods are produced to my knowledge.

There is no manufacturing process available in the US that can produce battery chargers competitive with offshore products. I can buy a single unit for $2, packaged for sale and including international safety agency approvals. Your bare pc board will cost more than that in hundreds. Like chop I hate to say it, but I don't see a successful business plan here.

You haven't even seen my business plan.

Well, it wasn't hard... The link just popped up on goggle when searching for electronics supplier and I clicked the link.
I don't think Gyrd3 was being cheeky, he was just wondering if you found us, how could you not have found a supplier instead.

edit: digikey has been my goto as well - very good customer service and very fast shipping. You will love doing business with them.

Look around you. How many shops sell electronics???
Look at Tandy Radio Shack THEY ARE ALL GONE.

Sell hamburgers. Everyone needs to eat. No-one needs electronics.

Yeah... I'm with Colin on that one.
The local suppliers are dying... and I can't see a way to make a viable local manufacturing company.
The majority of work is sent to China anyway due to costs. If you know some revolutionary trick, by all means, but you are going to have to be resourceful and on the ball.
One such way of being resourceful is locating suppliers that can provide you with prices and volume that match your business plan. This should be done by you in person or on the phone with sales representatives, not asking in a forum unless you can share specifically what the requirements are.

I use digikey quite often... but I still source components from other suppliers... High power LEDs and microcontrollers are usually sourced from other locations.

I was negotiating a cost for a piece of equipment to be developed with the Chinese and then I asked my Chinese friend to seek prices and he came back with prices that were 10%. I will never deal with the Chinese again.
Even electronics magazines are dying and the same with component suppliers. You can get everything on eBay for 30% and with FREE POSTAGE. You cannot compete with the Chinese.
Do an accurate research, like I did, and realise the TIME IS UP.
The only things that sell are PHONES and IPADs.

I wouldn't dismiss Ivy outright - he may have something novel that will market to a select group and may have good sales. Whether that turns into a successful venture is controlled by so many factors. I agree with Gyrd and Colin - find the best pricing on your components and include in all your costs - see if that turns out a viable price and then add in your profit. If you are still in an acceptable price range for your product, then God speed!

If this is something new for you, you may need an experienced business manager versed in electronics production with some ties to the Far East.

If you have the best invention in the world, build 10 of them and put them on eBay AT COST PRICE with free postage and see how they go.

I had the best invention ever.I put them on eBay FOR FREE and go no replies.

Huh? You are hard to read sometimes Colin - are you being facetious?

If you have the best invention in the world - you don't need E-Bay. For instance, arguably, Apple has produced several "best" in the world and they don't sell them through E-Bay, instead they have their own portal the Apple Store where they charge (gouge) customers for their products. They don't put them on sale and they don't allow others to resell without a license. That is how you sell the "best".

What in God's name did you place on E-Bay for free and got no action on??

You will never compete with China.
Nearly all the electronics suppliers get their items from overseas and whack on a huge profit.
In the UK we have RS components and Maplin.
Maplin don't even bother to change the packaging!! £40 in Maplin and the exact same item from China £12 inc free p&p.

If you're building gizmos for sale, don't forget to factor in the huge costs of 1) obtaining the necessary approvals for compliance with various national standards and 2) product liability insurance.
