DSC Power832 Help!

M

Me

Hi There,

I just received (used) a DSC Power832 unit with an LCD5501Z32-433 keypad and
some wireless motion sensors and door sensors.

I hardwired the keypad but left the phone line disconnected just in case it
tried to dial out with the previous owners details. I wanted to reset the
unit to factory defaults.

I reset the keypad to factory defaults using the procedure in the manual.
Then the keypad seemed to lockup. Now, even after a power cycle (yes, I
removed the battery too) the trouble light comes on, on the keypad, the time
is shown, but I can't enter anything into the keypad. What did I screw up?
The system also came with a 5400 printer module which was connected, but
after having this problem I tried disconnected it so I could try and isolate
the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

When you first power up the system, do you hear the telephone relay
"clicking" several times? If so, then the panel is "locked". Following the
reset procedure won't work (won't default the installer code). The trouble
light can indicate several things. You'll have to press [*], [2] and tell
us which lights come one.

Well, the panel was fine for a couple of hours -- I was able to default the
LCD keypad, go into program mode, etc.

Pressing * 2 doesn't do anything. This morning, though, I tried entering
program mode and it kind of worked -- I entered * 8 then the original
installer code and it took a few seconds but it did beep and show program on
the LCD panel with the trouble light turned off.

Is it possible for the panel to lock up like that? If so, what do I need to
do to fix that?

Thanks!

I just wanted to follow up to say I don't hear any relays clicking
when I power up the panel.

* 2 doesn't do anything on the keypad. I'm not getting anything from
the keypad at all. The clock shows, but pressing anything on it
doesn't do a thing -- no beeps, nothing. At one point this morning I
attempted to key the * 8 installers code to get into program mode and
while I was 'playing' pushing other buttons it seemed to go into
program mode (it showed program on the LCD). I couldn't do anything
else and it eventually went back to only having the clock show and hte
trouble light on.

Try pressing #, then 1, you may have programmed the keypad to another
partition.

If this works, imeadiately go into programming and set the keypad to the
proper partition. If all else fails, give me a call.

Ok, I did something right :) Thanks Jim --

I seem to be into the system now -- pressing # 1 got me into something that
shows O P E N and then numbers 1 through 8 (I think).

I try to go into program mode -- * 8 and my installers code but it gives me
a long beep. It's possible that I was successful in resetting the panel to
factory defaults earlier. Does the installer code stay the same or does it
default to a factory default? If so, what would that be (doh, suppose I
should have tried and figured that out before resetting it...)?

Pressing * 2 now gives me the numbers 1 3 8.

Thanks again Jim!

Get a PC link cable. I connects from the serial port on your PC to a header
on the 5010 board version 2.

Thanks -- I'm just sitting and actually reading the installation manual

I plan on getting this setup monitored so the company I'm setting this up

printer module and plan on connecting it to my home automation setup so that
I can program some options when certain events trigger.

Question -- is there a way to do local downloading to this panel? Similar
to Compass and First Alert (but hopefully a little more user friendly!). Is
it difficult to get the software and/or connect to the panel with a PC?

I have the pinouts for the cable and since computers is my business the
cable itself would take about 5 minutes for me to construct -- it's the
software I don't have access to. At least not until I decide to get serious
about doing security systems and home automation for other people and get a
dealers license.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the help. I got my system in, and the
wireless devices properly enrolled and tested. I think I need a few more
universal wireless devices for a patio door and a couple of living room
windows. I have motions there now but that doesn't help when we are in STAY
mode.

Now I think I'll get the 5400 printer module setup and actually attach the
siren. I'm almost ready to call for the inspection prior to monitoring...
