Driver for a USB to Serial (RS232) converter

Hello,

I purchased a USB to RS232 converter, hoping to be able
to hotsync my PalmIIIxe on a laptop that does not have
serial ports.

The CD that comes with the converter does not seem to
have the proper drivers for it. It looks like the
driver developer is a company named Cypress Semiconductor,
but they do not have any driver support located on their
website.

My question is, do these such devices have drivers that
are specific to the manufacturers, or is there such a
"universal" driver that would work with all (or most)
USB to serival converter devices? Please direct me to
a company or website from which I could get some driver
support.

A little off-topic in sci.electronics ...
But i always use www.driverguide.com to find most stuff - its usually
quicker going straight there rather than hunting through some of these
companies websites.

You will have to login as a member, but registration is free - and all
users get the same username/password : drivers/all
- so dont even bother registering ...

Not exactly the topic for this group, but it is a type of service
thing.

I would have bought a PCMCIA plugin card for the laptop. This card
would plug in to the PCM slot on the side of the machine. This way,
your operating system and mother board BIOS would see the port
directly, and thus not require such complications as converting a
port. The cost of the USB to Serial converter is probably more or
about the same as the PCMCIA serial port card.

fix your problem.

Cypress makes USB chips. the converter company must have used the stock
drivers. They are specific.
I do not understand why the driver does not work. I would take it back
and get one that does.

Are you using older Windows? I Picked up a Palm serial/USB
pigtail for $15 on Ebay, and it synced first time to WinXP with
no additional drivers. Sorry can't help with the driver issue.

You still may have another option on your laptop. Before my
cable arrived, I just synced through the infared port. Again,
just change the HOTSYNC settings, no new drivers needed.

Depends on where you shop. When I was looking for a serial port add-on,
USB->serial adapters were under $20; PCMCIA serial cards were around $100.

The one thing to watch for in either case is whether the device is supported
under the operating system you're using. PCMCIA is available for almost all
operating systems; USB isn't really supported in Win 95.
