Drive an heating element for an homemade oven.

Hi everyone,

I would like to be able to pilot an heating element to build an homemade pizza oven. How can I safely do that? What I would like is to keep the heating element always on without any issue.
Any help would be appreciated.

Can you explain what you mean by 'pilot'?
All you need to keep the element always on is a suitably rated switch.

Sorry I might have used the wrong word. I mean that I would like to turn it on constantly. What is happening at the moment is that the circuit breaker goes off after 4 mins of usage. I guess it's absorbing too much power. Would I need a controller for using it?

If the element is not faulty then your circuit-breaker is doing its job in preventing your supply circuit from being over-loaded. I suggest you get a lower wattage element. Controllers which reduce the heating capacity of an element can fail, or be set incorrectly. Either situation could be hazardous.

Presumably a 240V rated element as the link is uk-based. So current would be ~6A. If the breaker is 5A rated that would explain it tripping.

What about a thermostat that can prevent the element to absorb too much and not kicking off the circuit breaker?

Too slow to operate. The response time of a thermostat is much greater than that of a circuit-breaker.
As previously asked, what is the circuit-breaker rating (Amps)?
You need to power the element from a circuit which can handle 6A without stress, e.g. a 10A circuit.

The element is intended for use in a fan oven. If it is not cooled by air movement, then the element will overheat and nasty things can happen.

Do you have a fan in your pizza oven?

I'm afraid there's no fan in the pizza oven. Is there anything I can do to avoid overheating apart from using a cooling fan?

I have a 50 year old cooker with pancake rings which seem to bw happy running red hot.

If you put another similar element in series, then the power will be 750W and this will be split into 375W per element.
You could investigate what elements are used in commercial pizza ovens.

Perhaps just simply use a 2000W element from a standard convection oven which are designed to run red hot.
Again though, there may be limits on the run time as they normally cut out when the oven gets to around 350F.

You should NOT be using the element on a circuit protected by breaker 8 or 3. If it's on a circuit protected by any of the other breakers (all rated for 16A or 32A) and the breaker is tripping then the element is faulty and should not be used..
