Digital TV box lost picture

I have a digital TV box in the UK that stopped outputting a picture through the HDMI and SCART ports. If I leave the box off for a week, the picture works for about one minute and then goes off again. If I switch it on after a day, it won't work. But leaving it off for a long time (weeks) makes it come back on briefly. What component would cause this behavior?

check particularly in the power supply section for electrolytic capacitors that have bulging tops
I have had 3 settop boxes fail that way

The first thing I'd look for is swollen or ruptured capacitors in the power supply.

The problem may be caused by ripple on the power supply which affects this part of the unit before affecting other parts.

It's also a relatively simple thing to look for and a pretty safe start.

I you find anything, post some pictures.
