Digital or voltage controlled switch to turn on a 220v appliance

Hello All,
I have an Arduino and I want to use it to turn on a large coffee brewer.
I have very little electronics experience as this will be my first project and I am not sure what I am looking for to do this. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

A transistor to the output pin of the Arduino to switch a larger load (likely the 9-12V source powering the Arduino) that in turn switches a relay that can carry the current of the brewer...

It's main level voltage and current that can be deadly and can also cause a fire or other dangerous situations, caution and safety should be forefront... Since you state it's your first experiment may I suggest you take a step back and start with several smaller less lethal and dangerous things...

Thanks for the advice . . . and the concern. I will make sure to familiarize myself with how the arduino works with low voltage applications as well as look into how to safely wire high voltage components. Do you know of any products that would do the job? Or even a supplier that would carry such products?
