Data Book Project
Finally, we are starting to make our collection of 4000 data books
available online. We have made the first 50 available from today:
http://www.datasheets.org.uk

Or if you prefer to go directly to the first sample book:
http://www.datasheet.org.uk/databooks/databook.php?q=1

We know the system isn't the most user friendly so we are working
some improvements. :)

Arrggg, one .pdf file per page? Sheesh! Also, why not add a
full-size copy of the colorful cover page? That would be nice.

Thanks Win,
They are singular pages for a few reasons:

The PDF files average over 35 MB each when a complete Data Book. Up to
90 MB for a large book (B/W 300dpi scans). This method saves us tonnes
of bandwidth.

If a user downloads the complete Data Book they have no reason to come
back to the site. This earns us less commission on component sales so
we have less money to fund the project.

Also complete Data Books would allow competitor sites to download and
publish books that took we bought, we scanned, we entered into a
database.

We know its not ideal but think its better than nothing.

Yes, but at least:
* one pdf per datasheet,
* one pdf for the the full part list/shortform,... which is at the begining
of the catalog.

I just tried with the toshiba catalog:
4 pages just for the part index = 4 pdfs

Each page requires a manual code entry and each page have your datasheet
archive first page. Arghhh....

Just to discover the parts I'm looking for aren't there.

How can you expect me (or others) to come back next time.
Less me or others, less commissions.

Do you have the Rohm 2SB737/2SD786 and Toshiba 2SK240 somewhere?

Yeah, but having your site be so annoying that people don't come at all isn't
going to earn you many commisions either, is it?

I admire your amibition, but I think you're kinda stuck in the same place that
libraries are -- you're going to have to pretty much rely on government
funding, subscriptions, or donations to pay your bills. Can you imagine how
useless libraries would be if you had to go back to the shelf and see a new ad
every time you wanted to turn the page of a book?

That will happen eventually anyway, you're just slowing down the process. :)

This is true.

OK, but it's simply tooo painful, we won't use it. How about this,
group the relvant pages together, that's typically four to six pages
and put your header on only once. Since you STILL LOCK the files,
we can't even go grab the six pages and group them without your silly
front between *each page* - sheesh! Think of your customers, man!

And also, put up a full size of the cover.

This is why no one scans complete data books. Its hard to make the
information available without making it too available.

The amount of effort required to scan and list the parts in one data
book is huge.

ok, I could possibly group the files. Have a tick box next to each page
and allow you to select up to 6 pages. Then when the user clicks
download write them on-the-fly to a single PDF with a single header
page.

I'm not sure of the technical details but I think this could be a good
solution.

Hi,

I also dropped in to have a look and as it stands it is not a practical
site to use.
As it stands, I would not return. Sorry.
What I would be interested in is to buy your entire collection of books
on CD/DVD.
1 PDF per data book. The PDF must not be locked so as to allow various
pages to be extracted as needed.
How many $$$?

I agree. Also, it's not that we don't like looking at ads, we
do it all the time, especially if well designed and laid out,
etc. For example, you could sell ad space in your CD sets, and
sprinkle the ads around throughout the databook. But be careful
now, NOT IN THE MIDDLE of any of the datasheets inside the books.

Yep, not the best system in the world, but please keep up the good
work. A colleague today found some data he had been after for a while.

Thanks,
