Convert DC Power Jack to Battery

I have a PCB which has a spot for a DC power jack, with three pins, but i'd like to use a 9V battery instead. Can anyone help me out on which pins are positive and negative?

We also need to know what voltage the device requires, and at what current (this may be mentioned near the DC power jack or on the adapter if you have one.

For some reason my images won't upload, but the 2.5 mm dc jack is center positive. I see that the center connection corresponds with the pin on the back of the jack, so I know where positive lead goes. Does that mean the other two pins should be negative? And would you recommend a different power source than 9V? The chip has an operating voltage of 2.4 to 5.5V. well, if the operating voltage is 2.5 to 5.5 volts, then I'd use an adapter between 2.5 and 5 volts. Is there a regulator on the board to reduce the voltage?

What current does this require?

It's likely that if the board has a position for the power socket then it disconnects battery power once the plug is inserted, so one of those extra connections may be for the normally closed contacts in the socket.

Considering that the socket isn't installed, there is either a link somewhere, or the board was not designed for dual power.
